Gus Wackrow - founder of Wackrow's Joinery
"In 1962 I started in the joinery trade in Taumarunui as an apprentice before moving to Dunedin start my life experiences while still working in the trade.
From Dunedin, it was off to Australia for 3 years building houses for the miners in the outback but my Kiwi wife-to-be Rae and I thought home was best.
A short stay in Taumarunui to get married and then a move to Cambridge to start a joinery factory with my brother-in-law in a horse stable.
A few years later Rae and I purchased a business which has grown into the business that it is today. Along the way two children (Liam and Jeremy) arrived, grew up, moved away, got married and have now come back to their home town.
Cambridge has been home to us for many years and I have been actively involved in the community as a member of Jaycees and now Lions."
Carl Riley - Craftsman Joiner
"I was born and raised in Hamilton until moving to Cambridge in 1981, and I haven’t looked back since the move. Cambridge provided a great education, great community life and then the best joinery company in the Waikato.
Leaving school in August 1987, I had an opportunity to get an apprenticeship with Wackrow’s ( I was a floor sweeper after school for 5 months). This is when my love for joinery started and has not diminished since.
Completing my apprenticeship with trade certificate and then two years later with advanced trade certificate, and small business management courses stood me in good stead to finally purchase ½ of Wackrow’s joinery in 1997.
I'm married with 2 children and 1 dopey cat, Cambridge is a great place to bring up a young family."
Bryce Norris (Nossy) - Craftsman Joiner
"I have been involved with Wackrow’s Joinery for 15 years and it's where I served my apprenticeship and became a qualified joiner.
For two of those years, my wife Donna and I travelled to the North East of Scotland where I played rugby for a small club called Ellon. During the off season we did some sightseeing around Europe which was enjoyable and a great experience.
On our return, I slotted back into work, Donna and I had a son, Kody and we became shareholders in Wackrow's Joinery in 2006, which was very rewarding after being with the company for all these years.
My interests are my family and friends, rugby, diving, fishing, wake boarding and generally most outdoor sports."
Liam Wackrow - Management
"I was born and bred in Cambridge, and I started working in the business when I was 2 years old - around all the tradesman’s hammers and planes.
Over the years growing up with the company, I worked in many capacities such as sweeper boy, tea boy, making doors and then moved into the accounts side of the business while attending Massey University.
Gus then told me some great fatherly advice and said that I should try other careers before thinking about the business.
For the next eight years I worked in the finance sector before heading overseas to the United States for 2 years with my wife. Upon our return we settled back into Cambridge in our home, got a dog and got seriously involved into the business.
With the introduction of CNC technology into the company it is moving into the future with the best team, the best equipment and the best customers!"
Julie Payne - Administrative expert
I am very fortunate to have worked for Wackrow’s Joinery on an administrative level for 20+ years, firstly based at home while our 3 girls were young and then in the office on a part-time basis, increasing my hours over the years to fulltime.
I thoroughly enjoy the friendly family atmosphere that Wackrow’s has, being the only female in a male dominated environment, and as a people’s person I love dealing with our customers, some of whom have been with the company as long as I have.
Simon and I have lived in Cambridge since 1983, raised our family here, and have a great group of friends which we enjoy spending time with - boating, traveling and shopping!
Cambridge based but cabinetry and joinery work found NZ wide
Although based in Cambridge, Wackrow's Joinery craftsmanship can be found throughout the country - Auckland, Pauanui, Taupo, Hamilton, Hastings, Napier and Wellington to name a few.
